How to Approach the Bible

Getting into scripture can be overwhelming and confusing! This week Dr. Hahn shares pointers from his own journey on how a simple change in mindset can help us approach scripture. Adopting a holy humility, admitting to the Lord what doesn’t make sense, is the key. Dr. Hahn coins this as the holy “Huh??” This childlike honesty and intellectual simplicity open a new relationship with the Lord and allows Him to reveal his Word speaking to us.
Yours,
The St. Paul Center

Scott Hahn on the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Novena to the Blessed Mother, Queen of Heaven and Earth
I greet you, ever-blessed Virgin, Mother of God, refuge of sinners, and Queen of the Universe.
Most loving Mother, attracted by your beauty, sweetness, and tender compassion, I confidently turn to you, and beg of you to obtain for me of your dear Son the favor I request in this novena: (mention your request).
Obtain for me also, Queen of Heaven and Earth, the most lively contrition for my many sins and the grace to imitate closely those virtues which you practiced so faithfully, especially humility, purity, and obedience. Above all, I beg you to be my mother and protectress, to receive me into the number of your devoted children, and to guide me from your high throne of glory.
Do not reject my petitions, Mother of Mercy! Have pity on me, and do not abandon me during life or at the moment of my death.
Accept this offering, sweet Queen of Heaven and Earth, and obtain for me from your dear Son, Jesus Christ, the favors I ask through your intercession in this novena. Obtain for me also a generous, constant love of God, perfect submission to His Holy Will, the true spirit of a Christian, and the grace of final perseverance.
Amen.

Understanding the ‘Our Father’ – Dr. Scott Hahn – Deep in History

In this lecture from our 2009 Deep in History conference, Dr. Scott Hahn examines the seven petitions of the Lord’s Prayer, and takes a look at why this prayer is placed in the liturgy of the Mass after the consecration, and before the distribution of Holy Communion.  He looks at the context in which Jesus teaches the prayer during the Sermon on the Mount, the significance of referring to God as “Father,” and more.  Dr. Hahn argues that the ‘Our Father’ is a prayer that we pray much, but ponder little; and argues that a better understanding of these words, which come directly from the lips of Jesus, can lead us to a deeper appreciation for our relationship with God.

Scott Hahn talks about the Verbum Library

Verbum is a powerful way to engage the Tradition of the Church. Just as you shouldn’t read any book of the Bible in isolation, why would you read any book in isolation? Dynamic footnotes, powerful search tools, and advanced note-taking options make Verbum a powerful research assistant, helping you explore and connect Scripture, Church teaching, and the works of Catholic theologians past and present.

“Abraham: Father or Master?” Dr. Scott Hahn

http://faithandreason.com
Dr. Scott Hahn, Fr. Michael Scanlan Chair in Biblical Theology, spoke to Franciscan University of Steubenville’s 2011 Defending the Faith Conference “Ambassadors for Christ.” This is a 20 minute excerpt from the larger talk “Abba or Allah:The Difference it Makes” “For the last quarter of a century,” said Dr. Hahn, “I have shared a conviction with a growing number of people that Islam really does represent the single greatest force of the third millennium and also the single greatest challenge and threat to Christianity worldwide.” Dr. Hahn explains the very different conceptions of God in Islam (as Allah, Master) and in Christianity (as Abba, Father) and their consequences for life, religion, and interreligious encounters. “There’s a profound difference between slavery and sonship,” Hahn declared. “Until the sons of God outserve the slaves of God, Christianity is going to continue to dissolve.”

Scott Hahn: A Presbyterian Minister Who Became Catholic – The Journey Home (8-18-2008)

Marcus and Scott answer open-line questions from the Journey Home audience. Scott gave his life to Christ in high school. He soon became a convinced Calvinist. In seminary some thought he out-calvined Calvin. While teaching a Bible class, as a minister, a student asked him, “Where in the Bible does the Bible teach that it is the sole rule of faith?” Unable to give a solid answer he began an in-depth study, which would lead him Home to the Catholic Church.

Register Radio – INTERVIEW w/ Dr. Scott Hahn

This summer a Pew research study found that only 31 % of Catholics believe in the Real Presence. The National Catholic Register recently published a special section on the Eucharist, seeking to respond to help reignite belief in Jesus among us a time when Catholics greatly need to recapture a proper understanding of the Eucharist. Here on Register Radio we talk to Dr. Scott Hahn, who has written extensively on the Eucharist and recently released The Eucharist in Scripture, study guide and video series. It’s six lessons based on his three of books: “The Lamb’s Supper,” “The Fourth Cup,” and “Consuming the Word. ”
