We begin today a new Liturgical Year with the Advent Season; and on the First Sunday of Advent, the Gospel rouses us: “Be watchful! Be alert!”
This will be a recurring theme during the Advent season. Only the Father knows the exact hour when the Son of Man will arrive. Our role is to be attentive. But how are we preparing, brothers and sisters? Hopefully when he comes, he will not find us “sleeping.”
“Watch!” says Jesus. He may have been approaching us in the poor, the marginalized, the sick—and we have been ignoring him, pushing him away, shutting our e...
Sr. Terry Rickard, OP Preaches for the First Sunday in Advent (11/29/2020)
Preaching for the First Sunday of Advent, Sr. Terry Rickard offers a reflection on being awake to the continual coming of the God of hope, even as we lament our current realities:
"Be awake, be woke to the God of hope who comes to us now in midst of our lamentations. Lamenting the surging virus, a divided country and a sinful and suffering Church. Lamenting racial injustice, lamenting our wounded earth and 545 children still separated from their families.
As we enter Advent time, we lament with our eyes wide open, asking the God of hope to awaken us to the comings of God into our lives and into our suffering world."
Sr. Theresa Rickard is a Dominican Sister of Blauvelt, New York and the...

First Sunday of Advent marks the commencement of the new liturgical year. The Second Vatican Council commemorates the season of Advent in three ways: First, God who is beyond space and time enters in to the space and time of human beings: It is a season for the preparation for Christmas. The Gospel in Two Minutes - Sunday, November 29, 2020 (First Sunday of Advent)
(A classroom prayer service can be found below) One of Mike's memorable experiences from jr high was bombing on an audition for musical theatre - and the sinking feeling that came along with waiting several days to find out he hadn't been cast.
