Second Sunday of the Year
2021.01.17 - 2nd Sunday of the Year (John 1:35-42)
Let us pay attention to our call to discipleship. How are we like John the Baptist, pointing others to Christ by the way we live in love?
Our Mission to Point to Jesus | One-Minute Homily
John the Baptist shows us true humility by pointing his followers to Jesus. Hunter D'Armond, SJ, reflects on this humility and our own mission to bring others to Jesus and get out of the way.

Dear Friends in Christ,
All of us receive many invitations every year. Some we cannot refuse; some we cannot accept. When God invites, how do we respond? Today’s readings prompt us to reflect on God’s call and our response.
Today’s first reading narrates the prophetic vocation of Samuel who would later play a great role in the history of Israel. He was chosen and called by God. When God called, the boy Samuel did not recognize the voice of God. The human...

2nd Sunday of Ordinary Time 2018 - John 1:35–42 - JMT Gospel Reflection
Gospel John 1:35–42
They saw where he was staying and they stayed with him.
John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi”—which translated means Teacher—, “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. He first found his own brother...

Reading 1
1 Sm 3:3b-10, 19
Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the LORD
where the ark of God was.
The LORD called to Samuel, who answered, "Here I am."
Samuel ran to Eli and said, "Here I am. You called me."
"I did not call you, " Eli said. "Go back to sleep."
So he went back to sleep.
Again the LORD called Samuel, who rose and went to Eli.
"Here I am, " he said. "You called me."
But Eli answered, "I did not call you, my son. Go back to sleep."
At that time Samuel was not familiar with the LORD,
because the LORD had not revealed anything to him as yet.
The LORD called Samuel again, for the third time.

Dear friends,
On this second Sunday in ordinary time our readings highlight three essential steps to become a genuine follower of Christ. There has to be a call, then a response to that call, and eventually the discipleship.
The first reading from the Book of Samuel describes how God calls young Samuel in the middle of the night. Although Samuel grew up literally in the presence of God, has had perhaps the best of religious formation under the priest Eli, yet when the Word of God came to him per...
