THE RAISING OF LAZARUS is the climax of the first half, also referred to as the "Book of Signs" in the Gospel of John, yet there are still those who persist in asking Jesus for a "sign", or resolve that because of His "signs" he must be put to death.

Jesus and Lazarus were friends. When news came that Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha, was very ill, Jesus did something a bit puzzling to those with him -- he waited two days before setting out to see him. Then Jesus told his disciples: “Lazarus is dead, and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe.”
So Jesus and his disciples set out for the village of Bethany, a small settlement on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives, and the hometown of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus.
