Memory Verse

Whenever you helped a follower of mine, you helped Jesus.

Jesus loves everyone, so he feels what we do to other people. When we help someone, we make Jesus happy. When we fail to help someone, we make Jesus sad. Doing God’s work helps us to build his kingdom on earth.

Gospel Reflection for children

On this last Sunday of the liturgical year, the Church celebrates the feast of Christ the King. In today’s feast we recognize and honor Jesus as ruler of goodness and kindness.Feeding the hungry and giving drink to the thirsty and all the other things Jesus spoke of are ways we can help do God’s work here on earth. This is what good sheep do, they follow their shepherd.Sometimes it is hard to do what Jesus wants from us, but always remember that Jesus and the Holy Spirit are always with us to help us.

The Fourth Wise Man, given the name Artaban, searches all of his adult life for a new born king. A work of mercy for another person in distress caused a delay in meeting with the other three Wise Men. This delay caused the Three Wise Men to leave Artaban behind. Undeterred by many setbacks and disappointments, he continues his search, hoping to give his gifts of an emerald, a ruby and a pearl of great value when he finally finds the king. His search turns from weeks into months and then into years. During the search for the king, Artaban uses the gifts intended for the king to assist others in need. Ultimately he learns that he has found the king in those he helped. For I was hungry and you gave me to eat, thirsty and you gave me to drink……for whenever you did it to one of the least of my brothers or sisters you did it for ME.

GOSPEL:  In today’s Gospel we encounter a kingly figure coming down from the heavens and sitting on a glorious throne, However, it is important to see that he identifies himself with the weakest and the poor, so much so that he insists there is no distinction between himself and them. Included in this passage is what have been traditionally been referred to in Catholic Tradition as the corporal works of mercy that all followers of Jesus Christ are commissioned to be about in their daily lives. As such we are to be those who give comfort to those most in need and in doing so bring comfort to the Christ.

Crown of Love

Show the crown to the children. Tell them that we are going to be decorating Jesus’ crown. Allow each child to tell something good they did last week or will do this week to show they love others and then give them a sticker to add to the crown.

After everyone has a chance to add a sticker, place the crown on the prayer table and gather all the children around the prayer table.Have them say and do the Sign of the Cross.In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Have them hold hands as you pray:Jesus we ask you to help us spread more goodness because we love you. You have shown us the love of the Father and we gather together to ask for the strength of the Holy Spirit to guide us in love and courage to be good followers of you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Holiday Toy and Food Drive

In this unique passage, Jesus described the Final Judgment, not in terms of faith, but in terms of love. The saved were those who fed the hungry, visited the sick and prisoners, clothed the naked, and welcomed the stranger. Since this gospel is read at the beginning of the holiday season, this is a good time to revise your holiday shopping list to include those in need of charity.

Many churches sponsor holiday drives for dinners and toy baskets that serve the needy. Gather your family together, discuss the needs of the poor in the community, and budget your holiday expenditures for their needs. Place any notices for these drives on your refrigerator or bulletin board. Make shopping trips for the poor a family affair. After you discuss a holiday drive for the needy or make a family shopping trip, share Matthew 25:31-40 with your family.

Our Sunday Visitor

The Gospel today asks us to use our gifts and risk everything for the sake of the Gospel. Choose one of the following activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday reading:

  • Today’s Feast of Christ the King reminds us that Jesus identifies with those who are powerless, poor, and in need. Our participation in the life of Jesus demands that we serve those who are poor and in need. With this in mind, brainstorm with family members what Jesus will look for when he comes to judge us. Write down the responses on a sheet of paper. Display the paper on your refrigerator as a family reminder.
  • Jesus calls us to be shepherds for others. Who are the weak in the community? Do you know anyone who is struggling to belong in your community? Do they need friendship, support, food, tutoring? What can you do as a family?
  • Pray for people around the world who are lost, frightened and in need of the Shepherd’s care.

GOSPEL QUESTIONS

Jesus tells us about the kind of person who will be welcome in his kingdom.

Can you remember what they did to make Jesus happy? This group of people fed Jesus when he was hungry, gave him a drink when he was thirsty. They welcomed him when he was a stranger and lonely, they gave him clothes when he didn’t have any. They visited him when he was sick and in prison.

How do they feel and what do they say when they hear all this? They are very surprised and they ask Jesus when it was that they did all these things.

What does Jesus answer? He says, “when you did this to the least of my brothers or sisters, you did it to me.” What do you think this means?

We are all God’s children. We are all brothers and sisters – members of one big global family. And Jesus is saying that he is in each one of us. And so, every time we help someone else, every time we treat someone kindly, welcome them or share with them, then we are doing this to Jesus. Can you think of a time when you have done one of these things?

When have you given food to someone hungry or a drink to someone thirsty?

When have you welcomed someone or given someone in need some clothes?

When have you visited someone who is sick?

Or can you think of a time when someone has shared with, welcomed or cared for you? How did you feel?

MAKING CONNECTIONS

In Colombia, the local church, supported by CAFOD, is helping people who do not have enough food. As well as giving out food, they have also made sure that those who need it have face masks and soap, in order to protect them from coronavirus.

One member of the team said:

“It is very exciting for us to go to the communities and deliver food. We could see people’s eyes light up and their big smiles of gratitude. Families, especially children were very happy to see the food, and began helping their mum by carrying the food kit. Communities send their greetings and blessings for making this possible in difficult times.”

How does it make you feel to know that Jesus is in each and every person around the world? And, if Jesus is in every person and we are all brothers and sisters, how do you think we should treat each other?

This week, let’s all try to remember that Jesus is in every person and to treat people as Jesus wants us to. Let’s try to help those who are hungry, thirsty, lonely and sick.

INTERCESSIONS

We are all God’s children and so we pray together:

We pray for the Church throughout the world: that it may see Christ in all people and be a shining example of Jesus’ message to us. Lord, in your mercy…

We pray for our brothers and sisters throughout the world: that each person may know they are special and treat each other as Jesus asks. Lord, in your mercy…

We pray for our parish, family and friends: that we may all do what we can to share food and water with those who hunger and thirst, to care for those who are sick or in prison and to welcome those who are lonely. Lord, in your mercy…

Closing prayer: God of all, show us how to answer your call so we may see your kingdom – a place where no one is hungry, thirsty, or alone – here on earth. Amen.

ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS

Invite the children to colour in the optional accompanying illustration and to write or draw on the back how they will use their talents to serve God and make the world a better place in the coming week.

Encourage the children to demonstrate their talents – and to think about how they could use these gifts to make the world a fairer and better place for all people to live.

Invite the children to write a prayer, thanking God for the gifts and talents that they have been given.

Encourage the children to try not to hide their talents away this week, but to use them to help others and serve God. If they have written a prayer, remind them to pray it at home during the week.

What Did You Hear?

Diocese of Auckland provides the following starter questions for children to stimulate discussion about Sunday’s Gospel.

⚪  Today is a special feast in the church year. Do you know what it is? (it is the end of the church year when we celebrate Christ the King) How do we show that it is special? (there may bea procession, white or gold vestments etc)

⚪  What does ‘Christ the King’ mean? (Jesus will come back at the end of time to judge all people. He will sort out the good from the bad) Jesus tells us in the Gospel today of the sorts of things he wants us to do for each other. Can you remember what these things were? (feed and clothe the hungry and needy, care for the sick, welcome strangers, visit those in prison)

⚪  This Gospel sums up the message that Jesus has brought to us week after week. Jesus wants us to be loving and caring towards each other.

⚪  Are there still people in the world today who are hungry, thirsty or need our help? How can we help them? (we could contribute to groups such as St Vincent de Paul, Lovelink, caring groups, Catholic Caring foundation, caritas, food banks etc)

Let me tell you a little story about goats and sheep. Goats and sheep are similar, they are both woolly, they eat grass, they drink water. The goats and sheep in my made-up story lived side by side in a field where there were hungry animals who couldn’t find the patch of grass, and thirsty animals who didn’t know the path to the brook.
